Task Lighting
Task lighting improves comfort level and safety when you perform tasks that require visual concentration such as reading, office work, food preparation, shaving and grooming. For it to be effective, however, you must control the amount of light produced, how the light is directed, and the glare. To do their job well, task lights must emit plentiful, well-diffused light and be placed over the shoulder of the user or to the side of the work area. There are a few simple ways to ensure adequate task lighting. Firstly, make sure the bulb itself is out of sight. When you can see the bulb, it sends unnecessary glare into your eyes, making it more difficult to see the task. Position the light opposite the hand you write with. If you are right-handed, place the light to your left. If you are doing computer work, make sure the task lighting does not add glare to your screen. Experiment with the positioning of the task light until you get it right. Consider adjustable lamps for reading. What might be perfect for one person might be less than perfect for you. The cornerstone of good task lighting is the ability to see without eyestrain and glare. If you notice that it is difficult to see what you're doing, adjust the task lighting - or get new table lamps, desk lamps, floor lamps or under-cabinet fixtures that will get the job done. |
